50% of students don’t need a physical classroom, 53% believe that online colleges are reputable and
39% view the future of education as being more virtual

Boston, MA – June 11, 2013 – Millennial Branding, a Gen Y research and consulting firm and Internships.com, the world’s largest internship marketplace, today announced a new study called “The Future of Education.” The study shows how students view online learning, how they believe education is changing, how they study and interact in a classroom setting and how colleges can better help them prepare for the working world. This online survey of 1,345 students from colleges across America was conducted on May 16th.

The study found that students are more willing to learn online and view the future of education as more virtual and social media driven. Only half of students think they need to attend class in a physical setting to get an education. When asked what they saw coming next in education, 39% of students said that it would be more virtual and 19% said that they’ll be using social media to engage in the classroom. More students believe that online colleges are reputable and the majority are willing to gain professional experience in an online environment.

Additional highlights from the report include:

1. Colleges are expected to prepare students for the workplace. 25% of students feel unprepared for the working world and 69% of students believe that it’s both their college’s and their own responsibility to be prepared for the working world.

2. Students are demanding internships, career advisor support and mentoring. When asked what they believe their college is lacking that would prepare them for the working world, 52% said access to internships, 43% said people to mentor them and 35% said career advisor support.

3. They turn to internships to develop real world skills. 57% of students believe internships are most important when developing their business skills, followed by college classes at 12% and family and friends at 12%. Only 2% valued textbooks as the most important way to develop their skills. 69% of students would participate in an online internship if they were able to. 40% believe that their reliance on technology has hindered the development of their interpersonal skills.

4. Students want to study alone instead of with others. When studying for exams, 75% of students want to study by themselves and only 20% want to study with friends and classmates in person. In a classroom setting, 84% use a computer and 19% use an iPhone and tablet device to study.

5. There’s room for growth in the online education marketplace. 78% of students still believe that it’s easier to learn in a traditional classroom than online. They do value the benefits of online learning including balancing work and class, flexibility in assignments and lower costs. 43% say that online education will provide them with courses of the same or higher quality than traditional colleges.

6. Students are very interested in pursuing advanced degrees. 81% said they are interested in advanced degrees. When asked why, 55% said it would make them more employable and 38% said they would gain professional connections.

Quotes:

“Millennials understand that the future of education is online and since they were brought up with the internet, they are prepared for that change. Education should not be a one size fits all model because everyone learns differently, regardless of age, occupation and location. More online courses should be offered to cater to those who learn better in a virtual classroom.”

- Dan Schawbel, founder of Millennial Branding & author of Promote Yourself: The New Rules For Career Success

“As new modes of online higher education develop and students use technology in greater and greater numbers within and for their academic curriculum, it’s clear that the desire for relevant 21st century jobs and career experiences go hand-in-hand. To ensure the ROI of college long term – whether learning in offline or online settings, experiential education – specifically through internships and mentoring, is a must for the next generation student.”

Cities of Tucson, Grand Rapids and Los Angeles using Internships.com to enable youth and local businesses to connect

BURBANK – June 3rd, 2013 – Building off of the 2012 Summer Jobs+ program, President Obama has announced Youth Jobs+ and issued a challenge to businesses, non-profits, and government to work together to provide employment opportunities for low-income and disconnected youth. As part of Youth Jobs+, the Administration has asked Internships.com, the world’s largest internships marketplace, to participate by offering an online internships platform to any local government seeking to provide pathways to employment for their youth.

Under the program, Internships.com will provide a Youth Jobs+ platform to complement the youth employment initiatives of any participating city or county. The platform will comprise of a custom landing page where youth can search and apply for all open internships and jobs and employers can post their employment opportunities for free. The cities of Tucson, Grand Rapids and Los Angeles are already using the Internships.com platform to support their Youth Jobs+ projects and have in aggregate more than 3,500 opportunities available for their youth.

“We are honored to work with the White House and participate in this critical program by providing our leading internships platform to cities and counties,” said Robin D. Richards, Chairman & CEO of Internships.com. “Our youth are the future of our country and we must do everything we can to support their future careers. Internships.com is uniquely positioned to help with this effort and we are willing participants.”

Cities and counties across the country recognize the importance of providing pathways to employment for youth and the need to have a platform to ensure the success of their local programs. “We sincerely appreciate President Obama’s support in helping us find jobs for young people. In Los Angeles, jobs are critical in the inner city where the need is greater than the supply. If every business, nonprofit or government entity steps forward to help give a kid a break, we can create a solid and committed future workforce,” said Gregory P. Irish, Interim General Manager, Los Angeles Community Development Department. “Youth are eager for real-world experience. Employers who hire youth find that the enthusiasm they bring to a job is contagious. It’s a win-win for employer and employee.” said Jonathan Rothschild, Mayor of Tucson. “Let’s tap into the creative minds and abilities of our youth by engaging them actively in the economic engines of our cities and communities. Youth employment is about their future and ours!” said George K. Heartwell, Mayor, City of Grand Rapids.

Internships.com, a division of CareerArc Group, was previously chosen as one of the co-lead technology providers of the 2012 Summer Jobs+ initiative and continues to support the internship search function of the Summer Jobs+ Bank by providing youth access to more than 75,000 summer internship listings from more than 35,000 employers. Internships.com’s sister company, TweetMyJobs, also supports the Administration’s Joining Forces program by helping veterans find jobs through social media.

Houston, TX (April 26, 2013) – Mayor Annise D. Parker announced the launch of “TweetMyJobs Houston!” during today’s State of the City address. This new online jobs platform, powered by TweetMyJobs, revolutionizes recruitment by incorporating mobile and social media. “TweetMyJobs Houston!” is the connective thread that will distribute jobs throughout the greater Houston area and match qualified job seekers with employers. It will also produce hyper-local analytics to help facilitate executive decisions by government and business entities thereby enhancing and fostering future job growth in the Houston metro area.

“Houston is the biggest economic success story in America, however; as you know, the best can always get better,” said Mayor Parker. “That is why I’m launching ‘TweetMyJobs Houston!’ a free, interactive jobs initiative geared to match qualified job seekers with thriving Houston businesses.” The public-private partnership model is a solution for many small to mid-size businesses with limited recruitment budgets as well as recent college-graduates from our booming higher education communities that now need jobs.

Richards, Chairman and CEO of TweetMyJobs. “We are excited to bring this unique tool to the 4th largest city in America and we commend Mayor Parker for her proactive approach and desire to adopt the latest recruitment technology available to support her initiatives for job creation in Houston.”

2013 Outplacement Survey Report Released by DirectEmployers Association And CareerBeam

INDIANAPOLIS (April 23rd, 2013) – Demand for outplacement services are high but employers want to provide their transitioning employees with access to a new type of solution: one that encompasses both online and social technology, according to the first national survey conducted jointly by DirectEmployers Association, the leading nonprofit HR consortium of global employers, and CareerBeam, the leader in next generation outplacement solutions. The survey report released today can be downloaded free at http://www.careerbeam.com/outplacement/report/.

Highlights of the 2013 Outplacement Survey include:

58% of respondents are frustrated with the outplacement services offered by their provider, often viewing them as outdated, comprising the wrong tools and expensive.

Only 26% of respondents thought senior executives were the level of employees that would gain the most value from outplacement services.

In contrast, 82% of respondents had offered outplacement services to senior executives.

89% of respondents said the most important reason for offering outplacement was to help their transitioning employees get a new job.

“This survey reflects the fact that companies value outplacement services but increasingly view brick and mortar solutions as outdated. Our members are looking for cost effective solutions that they can offer to all of their transitioning employees,” said Bill Warren, Executive Director of DirectEmployers Association. “The outplacement industry is evolving as a result of the emergence of social, mobile and online technology and its benefits for laid off employees are immense.”

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics the average unemployed person in America has been looking for work for 38 weeks, which is more than double the time it took a decade ago. Respondents of the survey identified electronic job match alerts, a virtual career center and social network integration as the most important components to help users of a 21st century outplacement solution quickly get re-employed.

Nearly 300 human resource professionals participated in the survey between October 2012 and February 2013. DirectEmployers Association conducted the survey in partnership with CareerBeam, a division of CareerArc Group.
